# Licence, notice and certificate

Lesson 1 of [Marriage paperwork foundations](https://marriagelicense.fyi/academy/marriage-paperwork-foundations.md), 12 minutes.

Marriage paperwork uses different words in different countries. Learn the three main ideas first. Then check which words the office for your ceremony uses.

## A marriage licence

In the usual US process, you apply for a marriage licence before the ceremony. USAGov explains that a licence authorizes you to marry, and a certificate is official evidence of the marriage afterward. In that process, the licence alone does not complete the marriage.

## A notice of marriage

Some countries use a notice, not a licence. In England and Wales, you give notice of marriage at a register office before the wedding. The GOV.UK pages describe notice, not a marriage licence. In Australia, the NSW and Queensland pages say that you lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage with your celebrant.

## A marriage certificate

A certificate records the marriage after the ceremony. An agency that asks for proof of marriage may require a certified copy. A keepsake, a photograph or an ordinary photocopy may not meet its rules. Ask the agency which version it accepts.

## One word can mean different things

In Ireland, the registrar gives you a Marriage Registration Form after the notification appointment. The HSE says that people sometimes call it a marriage licence. Some offices use a combined form. Do not rely only on the title of a document. Ask the office what the document does.

## What to do with this

Write down which step applies where you will marry: a licence, a notice or another step. Then find the office that handles that step.
