# Notice of marriage date calculator

Enter your wedding date and where you will marry. The tool shows the last day to give notice, the earliest day you can give it, and how many days you have left.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://marriagelicense.fyi/tools/notice-period-calculator). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Enter wedding date.
2. Choose where you will marry.
3. Read the result.

## How it works

England and Wales: GOV.UK says you must give notice at least 29 days before your ceremony, and hold it within 12 months of giving notice. Its example: notice on 1 May means the earliest wedding is 30 May. So the last day is the wedding date minus 29 days.

Northern Ireland: nidirect says the minimum period is 28 days before the marriage, and notice must be given in the 12 months before it.

Ireland: the HSE says the 3 months' notice starts from the date of your marriage notification appointment. We subtract 3 calendar months.

Australia: NSW and Queensland say you lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage at least 1 month, and no more than 18 months, before the wedding.

A month back from a day that the earlier month does not have gives that month's last day. All dates are calendar days in UTC.

> These dates come from the official pages named in the method. Rules change. Confirm the date with the office before you book a venue.

## Questions

### Does this tool book an appointment?

No. It works out dates only. Book with the marriage licence office where you will give notice.

### Why is there no New Zealand or United States option?

New Zealand counts 3 working days, and US rules differ by state and county. This tool counts calendar days only, so it leaves them out.
